Filter seal replacement on an e61 espresso machine

Filter seals should be replaced on an e61 espresso machine at least every 12 months. Over time heat causes the filter seal to harden and the abrasive effect of coffee causes these seals to wear. If your machine starts dripping water aroudnt the outside of the portafilter during brewing then its time to change the group head seal. The group head seal is secured into the group head by friction and also holds the shower screen in place.

What you will need

  • Seal spike: this is a special tool that looks like a screwdriver with an angled spike at the tip, this is used to puncture and remove the used seal. These are VERY handy, but be VERY careful as they puncture skin as well as they puncture rubber seals.
  • Replacement group head seal
  • Replacement shower screen: it is recommended to replace the shower screen every 12 months
  • Food grade lubricant: fresh seals should be a very firm fit, applying lubricant to the seal can assist with installation.
  • Espresso machine detergent: if you are not replacing the shower screen we recommend and use Puly Caff.

Here are the steps for installing a filter seal on an e61 espresso machine:

  1. Looking up into your group head use the seal spike to remove the seal. Seals that are very old may break into a couple of pieces, be sure to get all of the pieces out. The screen should come out with the seal, but if not use the spike to pull it free.
  2. We recommend installing a brand new filter screen. If you are not replacing the screen, take the opportunity to clean it thoroughly. Scrub any coffee oil using a pot scourer or wire brush, the soak it in espresso machine detergent overnight.
  3. Slide the filter seal over the shower screen and slide it to the top of the screen with the bevelled edge facing up and the screen facing down.
  4. Most espresso machines will use an 8.5mm filter seal, but if yours is an older machine with a worn group head or portafilter lugs then you may require a 9mm seal or install a spacer shim on top of the filter seal.
  5. Push the seal and screen up into the group head. It should be a tight fit. You may need to push the seal into place at one point and work around 360 degrees.
  6. Once the seal is in place install the portafilter and lock it firmly into place.
